Little Cosmetics: Pretend Makeup, Real Fun {Review & Giveaway}

A few days after Greenleigh’s birthday, she arrived home from school with a gift bag.  There was no card and the teachers couldn’t remember who gave it to her.  As Greenleigh opened the gift bag to show me the present she had received, my eyeballs just about popped right out of my head – it was a complete makeup kit including press on nails, eye shadows in every hue, a variety of lip glosses, and blush.  Real makeup.  Sure enough, not more than 20 minutes later I was cleaning green, blue, and hot pink eye shadow off of Hazeline’s face (apparently, we received the 1980’s edition makeup kit).  As I wiped the makeup off, I realized there was a reason no card was included – clearly this mom hated me.  What had I done to her to deserve this?

Now, just to be clear, I’m very grateful that someone took the time to buy my child a gift and I’m not against little girls playing with makeup.  I’m okay with her wearing nail polish or lip gloss every now and again.  But an entire makeup kit for a 4 year old?  With real blush and eye shadows?  Well, that’s just begging for trouble.  A better option?  Little Cosmetics.

Little Cosmetics is makeup that looks completely real.  But the best part?  It’s totally fake.  When I first took this makeup out of the bag, I’ll admit, I even thought it was real.  Because it looks so real.  It has all the same characteristics of real make up – the colors, the textures, the shimmer and shine – it’s all there.  Turns out, it’s actually made from children’s craft materials put in cosmetic containers.  That means, little hands can touch the makeup all they want, and they still come away with clean fingers and faces.

We received the “Essential Kit” gift set which contains a pressed powder compact, lip gloss, pink blush compact, glitter shadow pot, eye shadow palette, makeup brush set, and nonbreakable mirror, all packaged in a pink organza draw string bag.  There are two other gift sets available – the Beauty Set and the Ultimate Set – each of which contains just a few more items than the Essentials Kit.  In addition to gift sets, Little Cosmetics also sells individual items and party favors.

But as I handed the makeup over for my girls to try, I had one question – Will they figure out it’s actually fake?

Turns out, the answer to that question is a resounding “No”.  My girls loved their kit and in the 2 weeks we’ve been using our Little Cosmetics kit, neither of them have ever suspected that the makeup is fake.  In fact, if you ask Greenleigh, she’ll tell you that she puts on makeup in the morning, just like mommy.  She’s excited to put on her makeup, and it’s adorable to watch.  Although she has some problems opening the compacts on her own, she loves playing with all the eyeshadows, powders, and blushes.  I love that there’s not a huge mess to clean up when she’s done playing, and it can all be packed up into the organza bag when she’s done playing.  And unlike real makeup these compacts are pretty durable.  My girls are a bit clumsy and have dropped them several times, but they show no sign of damage.  Best of all, with Little Cosmetics I don’t have to cringe when Greenleigh decides to give Hazeline a makeover!

    My soon to be 9 year old would love this! She had some “makeup” from a store in the mall but this package looks like the real thing. I think that would make her feel bigger than her little sister to use “grown up” makeup instead.
