Thanks HarperCollins for sending me a copy and providing the prize pack!
My daughter graduated from preschool earlier this year. It was an absolutely adorable ceremony complete with mini caps and gowns, presentation of diplomas, and a slide show of their favorite moments throughout the year. About halfway into the ceremony the one of the teachers announced that some of the students were going to be reading one of their favorite books, “If You Give A Mouse A Cookie”. It was a book that my daughter loved and that we read often in our house. I looked down and flipped through the program as the kids began reading, and was startled to hear my daughter’s voice come over the sound system. She could read! And not only could she read, but she could read really, really well. She confidently finished her assigned pages and smiled at the audience as she hit the last word. It was amazing.
Proud doesn’t even begin to describe the feeling I had as I watched her read, and I was even prouder when I found out that she was one of only five or six in her entire class to be selected for a reading part in the graduation ceremony program. For that reason, If You Give A Mouse A Cookie will always have a special place in my heart and home library. I will forever tie to it the feelings of astonishment and pride that I had in that moment when I found out that my newly turned 5 year old could actually read one of her favorite books.
So naturally, I was pretty excited to hear that Mouse was going to be going on another adventure… We all know what happens when you give a mouse a cookie, but what if you give him a brownie? What happens then? That’s right, Mouse is back with a delicious new chapter in the “If You Give” series – If You Give a Mouse a Brownie! A favorite in my house, the “If You Give” series has sold over 14 million copies and landed on the #1 New York Times bestselling list while exploring everything from giving Moose a Muffin, Dog a Donut, Pig a Pancake and everything in between.
After 9 years on hiatus, author and illustrator duo Laura Numeroff and Felicia Bond bring Mouse back, with the same rhythmic text and circular tale that my kids loved in all the books before it. If You Give a Mouse a Brownie starts with a brownie, but how can you eat a brownie without ice cream? And then you need a spoon, of course…
This book was everything you expect in the “If You Give” book series and perfect for beginning readers and storytime. The words and story were easy enough for 5 year old to read and understand, but kept my 7 year old’s attention as well. It’s a cute story that’s beautifully illustrated, and the perfect addition to the series we already love. All three of my kids loved this book, and I loved that my older two wanted to read it their little brother!
