New Year’s Craft for Kids – Party Hats!

New Year’s can be a tough holiday for kids.  The real festivities happen so late that they often can’t stay awake.  And if they do stay up to watch the ball drop, you probably don’t want to be anywhere near them the next day.  Because late nights all too often lead to cranky kids early the next morning.  I’m hoping that one day my kids will learn to sleep in, but it hasn’t happened yet.  We’ve thrown several kid friendly New Years Eve parties in the past, but even then, I struggled when it came to activities for kids.  So this year, I decided to be proactive and I came up with this New Year’s craft for kids!  Because everyone needs a party hat on New Years Eve!

The great thing about this hat is that the kids can decorate them in a way to reflect their personalities and can do most of the work themselves.  It’s perfect for parties or to get your kids excited about New Years in the days before the 31st.  And you probably already have most of the supplies for this New Year’s craft in your house!New Years Crafts for kids Hat

You will need:
Black cup
String of silver garland
Headband
Stickers (numbers + others for decoration)
Glue
Hot glue
Black marker (optional)

Step 1 – Place the cup upside down.  Affix the numbers 2, 0, 1, and 5 vertically on the front of the cup and then use stickers or paint pens to decorate the outside of the cup.

Step 2 – Glue the silver garland around the cup.  If your cup has a rolled edge, you’re going to want to make sure that it is completely covered by the garland.  If you can still see your rolled edge after covering the edge with garland, try using the black marker to cover the rolled edge.  You might also want to take this opportunity to color the top or seam of the cup (if their is one) using the black marker.

Step 3 – Once your child is done decorating their cup, attach the cup to the headband using hot glue by securing the sides of the cup to the headband.  Be prepared to use a lot of hot glue for this step, and realize that it may take two sets of hands.new years crafts for kids party hats in process

Step 4 – Hold the headband until the glue is dry enough to stay in place.  Set aside to dry completely, at least 15-30 minutes.  Then wear it for the festivities…even if they can’t make it all the way to midnight! New year's eve party crafts for kids party hats

Wishing you a very happy and healthy New Year!
