School Lunch Innovation from Horizon Organic {Review & Giveaway!}

Disclosure:  I was provided a Horizon Organic back to school school lunch kit (identical to the one that I’m giving away in this post) to facilitate my review.  All thoughts, text, and photos are my own.

My girls go to a school that provides breakfast, lunch, and 2 snacks, but about midway through the summer, I noticed lunch boxes on the shelves in Greenleigh’s classroom.  When I questioned her teacher about the sudden appearance of lunch boxes, she told me that some of the lunch options were not that great and some of the parents had decided to opt out of school lunch and send their kids with homemade lunches instead.  Sure enough, about 2 weeks after that, Greenleigh started asking me to make her lunch.

[Insert heavy sigh here.]

You know those moms that send their kids to school with creative Pinterest-worthy lunches that include sandwiches shaped like puppy dog faces?  Yeah, I’m not one of those moms.  It’s not that I don’t want to be, it’s just that as a busy working mom, I often lack the time, creativity, and opportunity to grocery shop for the supplies needed for said Pinterest-worth lunches and puppy dog face sandwiches.  So school lunches always worked for us.  But when I started getting reports back from the teacher saying that Greenleigh was skipping snack – and even lunch on occasion – I knew that something needed to be done.  I was going to have to start finding the time to put together nutritious lunches and snacks to send with her (Hazeline wasn’t an issue because she was still eating and enjoying school lunches and snacks).

And so I started researching…after all, I didn’t want to send her to school with just anything – I wanted her lunches to be balanced and nutritious, full of foods that she would want to eat.  Most importantly, I didn’t want her to get bored with the options I was sending her with.

It wasn’t long before I stumbled on Horizon Organic 5 Lunch Needs & 50 ways to please.  Designed by nationally-recognized nutritionist and author Elizabeth Somer, this guide sets out to help parents and kids make a plan for their school lunches.  It contains not only a outline of the 5 food groups but 10 kid approved lunch box ideas under each category.  The end goal is for parents and kids to work together in selecting healthy options for their lunch boxes, with Horizon Organic milk being a part of that plan.  Shelf stable and packed with 8 grams of protein, Vitamins A & D, calcium and the added benefit of DHA omega-3, Horizon Organic is the natural choice for school lunch boxes.

With the guide’s help, we’ve been making lunches in our house for roughly 2 weeks and things are going remarkably well.  Every night, Greenleigh helps me put together a lunch filled with healthy options and every afternoon she comes home with an empty lunch box.  It’s not puppy dog face sandwiches, but it’s healthy and I like that.  Better yet, Greenleigh likes it, and I suppose in the end, that’s all that really matters.
