Green Kid Crafts: The Perfect Craft Subscription for Your Pre-Schooler {Review}

A few months ago I ordered one of those monthly craft box subscriptions for Greenleigh.  She just adores arts and crafts, and since I can’t always make it to the craft store, I thought having them delivered to our house was the best bet.  I was so excited when the box arrived, only to find that all the crafts were way, way above her age and ability levels.  It ended in me doing 3 hours worth of crafts and her getting bored watching me.  I ended up cancelling the subscription after 3 disappointing months.

So you can see why I was skeptical when I was given the opportunity to review Green Kids Crafts.  I love to craft and I want Greenleigh to explore her artsy-craftsy side, but I don’t want to do hours worth of kid focused crafts because they aren’t age appropriate for my 3 year old.  I just don’t.  But I was so pleasantly surprised by our experience with Green Kid Crafts and their Discovery Boxes, that I couldn’t wait to write this review.  After virtually swearing off box subscription crafts, I’m actually Green Kid Crafts newest customer.  Let me tell you why…

Each Green Kid Crafts monthly Discovery Box brings a new theme relating to nature or the environment.  We received the November Discovery Box, which was a “Food Adventures” themed box.  It included 3 separate crafts (Rainbow Tile Coaster, Sprout Garden, and Fishing Game) along with a healthy, organic snack and coupons for other natural foods.  Each of the crafts came with instructions and there was a “Discover More” guide which provided more craft ideas using materials found around the house, related reading, and other fun facts all related to the Food Adventures theme.  Naturally, the snack caught Greenleigh’s attention right away, and once it was opened we went right to work on the Rainbow Tile Coaster.

Greenleigh loved these crafts and although it was my intention to do one craft each weekend to make the kit last a little longer, we did the whole kit over the course of a few hours.  She couldn’t help herself.  She was having too much fun, and I didn’t want to hold her back.  Plus, I think the snack provided the fuel she needed to keep going.

As a mom, I love this craft box for so, so many reasons.  First, these are crafts that Greenleigh can do herself.  I mean, not all on her own – I had to help her trace and cut out the fish for the fishing game – but other than that, I did very little.  This was one of my big concerns before I got the kit – Would it be age appropriate?  Better yet, would it be appropriate for my 3 year old that has problems focusing and often gets distracted?  Now that we’ve explored this kit, I can answer both of those questions with “yes”.  These kits are intended for kids from 3-8, and although I can’t speak for the upper end of that spectrum, I can definitely say that this kit had things that my child could do on her own.   As a parent, I don’t want to do things for her.  Instead, I want to offer help, assist, and encourage.  With this kit, I gave her directions and she took it from there.  It was great to watch her have fun crafting and I couldn’t believe how focused she was on the different activities.  Have you ever seen me post a picture of my child concentrating like this?  No, you haven’t.

Second, I love that this is an eco-friendly craft kit.  When I was first offered the opportunity to review this kit, I recognized that “green” was in the title, but wasn’t sure what that really meant.  As I researched, I found out that Green Kid Crafts only uses safe, natural, and sustainable materials.  The individual instruction cards for each craft actually list sustainable ingredients.  And even more impressive, every purchase you make with Green Kid Crafts supports sustainable business, and a portion of each sale is donated to environmental organizations.  They’ve actually won several awards and designations for ethical business practices.  Apparently, they take the term “Green” pretty seriously and that’s a company I can get behind.

Third, these aren’t crafts that you complete and forget about, they really leave a lasting impression.  For example, Greenleigh has wanted to play with the fishing game each day when she comes home from school.  And we have to keep the Basil from our garden project watered, so that keeps our crafting experience fresh in her head.  I like that this isn’t just 2 -4 hours worth of fun and then forgotten about.  Watering the sprouts is also developing responsibility early, and I like that.

So there you have it – All the reasons why Green Kid Crafts rocks my socks.  And just in case you’re wondering, I really am there newest customer.  If you want to try them out, you can use the code “BLOGGY” for 10% off your order (that’s the same code I used when placing my order and not an affiliate code, I promise).  If not, make sure to follow them on Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest – they are always posting great ideas to keep the kids busy and have some awesome holiday ideas.

Happy Crafting!
