Fall Fun with Barbie Photo Fashion {Review}

“Smile Mommy”, “Stand there Mommy”, “No Mommy, stand right there“, “Smile more”, “More”, “Aaahhhhwoooo!”, these are the phrases (demands?) that have pretty much taken over my house since Greenleigh’s Barbie Photo Fashion doll arrived.  Please note that the last quote is actually a sound that I normally use to get the girls attention so they’ll smile for the camera.  It’s sad when your words/phrases/sounds are used against you.  It also made me realize how annoying I may have been with the camera the last few years.  Oops.  Putting that aside, Greenleigh has been snapping up a storm.  These are pictures from her world from the last 2 weeks:Whether it’s Hazeline, her furry siblings, or just the clutter on my counter top, everything is now a photo opportunity.  And as much as she loves being behind the camera, she often insists that I take her picture.  Perhaps this is just demonstrating her versatility – she’s a model and a photographer?  There has to be a future in that somewhere…  So when it was time to make cookies for the party at the girls’ school, Barbie was front and center to document the occasion.  We each took turns taking pictures and smiling for the camera.

Barbie even went to school with us to drop off the cookies.  As I was walking out of school, one of the other mothers from Greenleigh’s class saw the Barbie in my hand (Greenleigh likes to take it everywhere with her, but I don’t trust leaving it at school) and asked what kind of Barbie it was.  I explained what a Photo Fashion Barbie and even showed her some of the pictures we had taken.  The other mom was amazed that they could put a camera in a doll, but then immediately followed it up with, “oh, that’s probably too advanced for my daughter”.  But that’s the thing – it isn’t difficult to work at all.  Like, not even a little.  It’s so incredibly user friendly.

The key to using Photo Fashion Barbie is her “tool belt” – it contains everything that you need to take a picture, display a picture, play with backgrounds and effects, upload it to your computer, and so, so much more.To turn the power on, press the heart button in the center of her belt.  When taking pictures, make sure that side switch is up, and then press down on the heart button again.  The thing that I love most about the camera is that it takes a picture instantly.  It doesn’t focus like a regular camera so there’s no delay – which is great when it comes to taking pictures of Hazeline.  She’s incredibly fast and often moves in the time that a camera takes to focus, but this camera can capture her.

The picture that you just took will remain on Barbie’s shirt until you press the center button to clear the screen and take another picture, or the Barbie shuts off due to inactivity.

To add effects to a picture you are about to take, keep the camera in that same mode (on with the side switch up), and press on the smaller hearts on either side.  There are so many effects that you can add, that scrolling through them can take a while, but once you find the effect you want, select your target subject, and snap the picture like normal by pressing the heart in the center of Barbie’s belt.

To review your pictures, all you have to do is flip the side switch down and use the side heart buttons to scroll through your memories.  If you find a picture that you’d rather not keep – for example, Greenleigh likes to take lots of pictures of my feet for some reason – you can delete that particular picture by holding down the 2 side buttons at the same time.  The press them again (simultaneously) to confirm that you want to delete, and…poof, they’re gone!

To charge your Barbie or download pictures, just pop out the USB cover on Barbie’s back, insert the pink USB cord, and your files will be in the “Barbie” drive in “My Computer” drivers.  Once you’re done, you can turn the power off by pressing down on the center heart on Barbie’s belt and holding it for 3 seconds.  If you forget, like I often do, Barbie will shut off automatically after 2 minutes.

So there it is – easy as pie.  My 3 1/2 year old has it mastered and has become very attached.
