Hurricane Party

It’s been a crazy couple of days here in South Florida.  We’ve all been busy watching Isaac and wondering – will it hit us or won’t it?  Will it be a hurricane or a tropical storm?  Will we lose power/cable/phone or will we be fortunate enough to keep it?  Luckily, my house still has all 3…for now.  And even luckier is that Isaac has stayed far enough away that we are just getting the outer edges of the storm.

As a Floridian, there are certain things you must do when a storm is threatening.  They’re like unwritten laws.  For example, you must go to the grocery store and stock up on food.  It’s a great idea, but in all reality, most of the stuff you purchase is just going to spoil if you lose power.  Because of all the people I saw stocking up at the grocery store on Saturday, I didn’t see one of them stocking up on canned corn or peaches.  Myself included.  You must watch insane amounts of news coverage days in advance.  So when the storm is actually on top of you, you’re just so sick of hearing it that you turn off the tv and hope for the best.  After all, the days of news coverage you’ve watched have pretty much said that the end is near anyway.  You must also hear and use the words “feeder bands“, “squalls”, and “the dirty side of the storm”.  These terms specifically refer to hurricane season, and apply no other time of the year (in South Florida, at least).  You must use them enough during the storm to validate their very existence.

And you must throw a hurricane party.  Okay, technically, these pictures are from a birthday party earlier today, but I suppose it’s the toddler version of a hurricane party.  Pirate theme and all.

Everyone keep your fingers crossed that we keep our power through the night since that’s when the storm is supposed to hit hardest.  I hope this is the closest we come to a hurricane this year.

  4. Okay I just have to share this because I found it so funny over the past week. My heart goes out to all those displaced and disrupted by Hurricane Isaac, and I truly hope that people are able to get through it all without too much trouble.

I spent the week leading up to Hurricane Isaac’s arrival in the Outer Banks in a 6BR house with a bunch of friends and their kids. One particular child, blessed as he is, was just an absolute nightmare. This poor boy was just over 2 years old and he was literally upset at every single thing that went on. I mean it was a week long tantrum with this one. I felt for the parents, but then I didn’t when he stole my daughter’s toy, but then I did again, but then I didn’t. And on ad infinitum. So the week is coming to a close and we’re packing up to get out of OBX just as we get the news that a hurricane is coming, Hurricane Isaac. Well… you can probably guess what that little boy’s name is. Life’s little synchronicities can be amusing sometimes.
