My Cookie Plate: A Sweet Adventure {Review & Recipe & Giveaway} ***Giveaway Now Closed***

We are a family of sweet tooths.  We love sweets of all kinds, but cookies tend to be a favorite.  At the end of a long day Erajh and I will often bake a few cookies and only feel slightly guilty that the kids are already asleep so we can’t share.  And there probably won’t be any left over when they wake up (you snooze you lose, right?).  Easy to make, cookies tend to be my go-to treat to bring to playdates, get togethers, and parties.  So naturally, I was thrilled when the folks at My Cookie Plate contacted me and offered to let me start my very own cookie adventure.  In case you aren’t familiar, My Cookie Plate is a traveling web-interactive cookie adventure.  The My Cookie Plate kit comes with a colorful plate, beautifully illustrated storybook, and lifetime access to mycookieplate.com, which is full of tempting recipes.

Here’s how it works – When you receive your cookie plate you log on to mycookieplate.com and register the unique identification code located on the back of your plate.  Once you enter your code, you can name your plate, get an adoption certificate, and decide your plate’s travel plans.  There are two options when it comes to travel plans, freestyle and planned.  Freestyle travel plans are an endless adventure; you give your plate away and will most likely not see it again.  A planned adventure allows you to give your plate away full of treats with the expectation that it will be returned.  And with the knowledge that cookie plates don’t like to be empty, hopefully it will come back overflowing with treats.

Regardless of which travel plans you choose, you will receive updates by email when your plate has reached a new household, a new recipe is added, or it earns a new badge.  Badges can be earned in many different ways.  A cookie plate will be awarded a badge for adding recipe with a specific ingredient, traveling a certain distance, or when a plate visits for a specific holiday.  For example, my plate received the “Lemon Alert” Badge because I made lemon cookies (super easy recipe below), and will earn it’s Special Delivery and Friend x1 badge for being hand delivered and making it’s first stop at a friend’s home tomorrow.  There are over 100 badges that your plate can earn.

We received our plate and registered it on the cookie plate website.  Greenleigh and I then read the My Cookie Plate Adventure storybook.  Incorporating rhyming language and colorful illustrations, the book explains what a cookie plate is and the rules for having one.   And of course, the number one rule – that it must be passed on for another to enjoy.  The hardback book explained the concept of a cookie plate in simple terms and Greenleigh seemed to understand the plan when we were done.

So then it was on to deciding what to bake and determining our cookie plate’s adventure.  While I originally thought I was going to choose the freestyle adventure, I ended up changing my mind and selecting the planned adventure.  I liked the idea of giving the plate to others and getting it back (maybe even with a few treats on it).  I decided that the arrival of My Cookie Plate was the perfect chance to try a new recipe and drop off some cookies with our neighbors who are always so generous when it comes to holidays and hand-me-downs.  Here’s the recipe for the lemon cookies that I made.  I also shared this the mycookieplate.com website, so you can find it there too!

You will need:

1 package lemon cake mix (18.25 oz)

2 eggs

1/3 cup vegetable oil

1  tablespoon lemon juice

1/3 cup confectioners’ sugar for decoration

Step 1 – Preheat the oven to 350 degrees

Step 2 – Pour cake mix into a large bowl.  Stir in eggs, oil, and lemon juice until well blended.

Step 3 – Drop teaspoons full of dough into a bowl of confectioners’ sugar and roll them around until they are lightly covered.  Once covered, place on an ungreased cookie sheet.

Step 4 – Bake for 10-11 minutes, or until the bottoms are lightly brown and the insides are chewy.  Allow time to cool, then place them on your cookie plate.A few of them might not have made it to the plate though.  Oh well.

My Cookie Plate was a great activity for Greenleigh and I to do together.  Although baking with toddlers can be frustrating, it was fun to watch her enthusiasm.  The recipe was easy enough for her to help and she loved the colorful plate that they went on.  I can’t wait to see Greenleigh when we drop  our cookie plate off at the neighbors tomorrow and when it returns to our house in a few days or weeks.  But its journey is far from over, because after this stop, there are lots more names on our planned adventure list.  I’m looking forward to following our plate.

I would definitely recommend the My Cookie Plate if you are looking for a gift for a family with kids of any age.  Our neighbors have kids slightly older than Greenleigh, and I think they are really going to enjoy being a part of the adventure.  It would be a perfect birthday gift, Easter gift, or surprise present for anyone.
