DIY – Hazeline’s Peacock Costume

I’m normally not one for do-it-yourself projects when I could just go to the store and purchase, but when I saw a picture of a baby peacock costume on one of my message boards a few weeks ago, I decided it was the costume I had to have for Hazeline.

Unfortunately, it was something someone had made.  I looked and looked all over the internet, but couldn’t find anything like it.  I thought about going to Etsy and seeing if someone could make it for me, but then I decided to give it a try.  What’s the worst that could happen?  Wait…don’t answer that.

I started with the easy part.  I purchased a dusty blue onesie from Children’s Place for $1.49 and found orange tights at Gymboree for 74 cents.  I then used all my coupons for the craft store and picked up as many peacock feathers as I could find, about $17 worth.  When I was at the craft store, I also picked up a piece of blue felt that had an adhesive side.

I found a half circle shape with scalloped edges in my scrapbooking supplies, enlarged it using our printer, and traced it on the adhesive side of the felt.

I then cut along the traced lines

and attached the feathers, making sure that the peacock feather eyes would be visible when Hazeline was looking at me.

I then used my glue gun to put little dots of glue around the edge of the semi-circle and stuck it to the onesie.  Since it was adhesive felt, it might have suck without the glue, but I didn’t want it to fall off, so I used glue as well.  We had to do a fitting to make sure that I put the feathers high enough and she wasn’t going to sit on them.

I then went on Etsy and purchased this headband to complete the look.

I later figured out that I could have made this myself very easily, but it was already delivered by the time I figured it out.  Oh well.

It is my first attempt at a do-it-yourself costume and I think it came out pretty okay.  Not like the picture, but I’m happy with it.

And the best part is that this costume helped me get Greenleigh into her giraffe costume that she has not wanted to wear.  I convinced her that peacocks and giraffes are best friends.I now have photographic evidence that my house really is a zoo!

Well, now I HAVE to see a picture of yours! I would love to see other versions of this costume. Hopefully you are more artistic than I am. Were you able to find the teal feathers and teal onesie? I couldn’t find a teal onesie so that was why we went with dusty blue and adjusted the feather color accordingly.
